January 6, 13, 20, (not the 27th) & Feb 3 Snow date make-up Feb 10, if needed
Is Jesus still healing people today? Are these healings real, and do they last? How can we pray for healing? Can my broken heart be healed as well as my body? In her new book, Dr. Mary Healy answers these questions and more. Join St. John-Holy Angels Parish for an informal book study and conversation on the book, “Healing: Bringing the Gift of God’s Mercy to the World,” led by Terry Haar/aRise Healing Ministry. Discussions will be held at Holy Angels Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE 19711, from 10 am-12 noon on each date. Use the San Damiano Center back entrance to the church. You do not need to attend all of the dates. You can check in for the reading assignments missed before each week you attend. Please read the first 66 pages prior to the first meeting. (If you know your envelope number that would be great as well, if not, no worries). Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.
THIS WEEKEND, DECEMBER 30/31 (and Monday, January 1st – Friday, January 5th)
Weekend Masses December 30 & 31 – The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph – Masses at 4 pm on Saturday, December 30th and 10:30 am on Sunday, December 31st.
THE SOLEMNITY OF MARY, HOLY MOTHER OF GOD (A Holy Day of Obligation) & New Year’s Day
Sunday, December 31st, at 4 pm, Monday, January 1st, at 10 am
The Blessing of Calendars will take place at the 4 pm Mass, on December 31st and at the 10:00 am Mass on January 1st.
The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God is a Holy Day of Obligation. This year, the obligation to attend Mass on this date is abrogated, in accord with the complementary norm to canon 1246 §2 confirmed for the dioceses of the United States of America. (Whenever the Solemnity of Mary falls on a Saturday or on a Monday, the precept to attend Mass is abrogated.)
While attending Mass for this solemnity is not an obligation, it’s certainly a wonderful way to honor Mary, our Savior’s Mother, our Mother. Attending the one hour Mass New Year’s Eve or New Year’s morning is a great time to thank God for the blessings of 2023 and to ask God for His blessings in the coming year. (Something to think about: There are 8784 hours in the year 2024. If you took the time to attend Mass every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation, that would be 58 hours total, which is less than 1% of those 8784 hours. Think about it, less than 1%. If you watch TV or are on an electronic device 3 hours a day, that would be 1098 hours or 12% of those 8784 hours. How will you use your time this year?)
GIVING TREE: Thank you, to all the parishioners of St. Polycarp who made this year’s Giving Tree Project a big success. Every year we are amazed by the outpouring of love and generosity you show to the families in our community who need it the most. This year you made the Christmas season extra special for so many of our children and families. God bless you all!
BE BRAVE, ANSWER THE CALL: Are you a Catholic living in harmony with the teachings of the Church? Are you at least 18 years old? Have you received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist & Confirmation? Are you sufficiently mature to perform the duties of Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Mass or to the sick and homebound? These are the qualifications needed to be considered for Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. If this is a ministry you feel God calling you to, please contact Cindy Kennedy at Kennedy-078@msn.com. Formation and training will begin early January.
NEW CANDLES: We hope that you have noticed the new candle stands in the back of the Church. The aqua votive candles ($3 each) are available to be lit for your intentions. Place your $3 in the slot and then just press the button in front of that candle that you would like lit. You must press and hold the button until it lights.
The white candles are memorial candles. These candles are available to be lit in memory of someone. The introductory fee of $120 includes the candle being lit continuously for a full year with a memorial name plate placed in front of that candle with the person’s name on it. This introductory fee is good until Ash Wednesday when the fee will be $150. If you are interested in having one of these candles lit, please contact Kathy at the office. The Work of Christmas Begins
When the carols have been stilled,
When the star-topped tree is taken down,
When family and friends are gone home,
When we are back to our schedules
The work of Christmas begins:
To welcome the refugee,
To heal a broken planet,
To feed the hungry,
To build bridges of trust, not walls of fear,
To share our gifts,
To seek justice and peace for all people,
To bring Christ’s light to the world.
– by Michael Dougherty, a variation on Howard Thurman’s ‘When the Song of the Angels is Stilled’

NATIVITY CRÈCHES FROM THE CATHOLIC CHURCHES OF DELAWARE AND MARYLAND’S EASTERN SHORE: Last Christmas, the diocese invited each of its 56 parishes and 18 mission churches to submit a photograph of their crèche to be included in the video that celebrates the 800th anniversary of the very first Nativity scene. In 1223, wanting to emphasize the humble circumstances of Jesus’s birth and to inspire the local people to more deeply appreciate the Christmas story. St. Francis of Assisi set up a live Nativity scene in a cave in the quaint Italian village of Greccio.
On Sunday, December 17th, 2023, a new video debuted on the Diocese of Wilmington’s YouTube channel. This video, produced by the Diocese of Wilmington, presents a montage of photographs of Nativity crèches from the Catholic churches of Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The video includes beautiful instrumental Christmas hymns as a background. Blessing of a Crèche
God of every nation and people,
From the very beginning of creation
You have made manifest your love:
When our need for a Savior was great
You sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary.
To our lives he brings joy and peace,
Justice, mercy and love.
Lord,
Bless all who look upon this manger;
May it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus,
And raise up our thoughts to him,
Who is God-with-us and Savior of all,
And who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Amen.

CHRISTMAS NOVENA: Christmas is a time to reflect on the blessings of family and shared togetherness. We exchange gifts as an act of love and appreciation, but there is no greater gift we can give than the gift of the Holy Mass. Although a loved one may no longer be present to share this time with us, let us remember that, now more than ever, they rely upon us for their spiritual well-being. Take a moment to show your affection by praying on their behalf. Living or deceased, the best gift you can give is the gift of the Mass. Please use the Christmas Novena envelope to show your loved ones they have not been forgotten.
CHRISTMAS FLOWERS: Advent is a time of preparation. Just like parents in every time and every location prepare for the birth of their child, Mary and Joseph did their best to welcome the Holy Child in the humble surroundings where our Lord entered the world. Wouldn’t this be the ideal time to proclaim the birth of our Savior by decorating our Church with all the splendor befitting the birth of the King of Kings? During this Advent season, please consider using the Christmas flower envelope to help us proclaim our joy as we rejoice in the birth of our Lord.

LET US PRAY: Magnificat
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children forever.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
