LET US PRAY:

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry,
poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this our exile
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving,
O sweet Virgin Mary.

Seminarian James Gebhart, to be ordained a Deacon on May 13, 2023

 From our Diocesan Website www.cdow.org:

May 3, 2023 — (Wilmington, Delaware) — Mr. James M. Gebhart, a resident of Newark, Delaware, will be ordained to the transitional diaconate by the Most Reverend William E. Koenig, on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 11:00 a.m., at his home parish, St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Hockessin, Delaware, it was announced recently.

Mr. James Gebhart

Mr. Gebhart, who will turn 26 in July, attended St. Catherine of Siena and St. Elizabeth’s Elementary Schools, and is a 2015 graduate of Delaware Military Academy. In 2019 he graduated from Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey with a Bachelor’s in Catholic Theology. He was the class of 2019 Seton Hall Valedictorian.  He is currently pursuing graduate studies at St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, Maryland. He spent the summer of 2019 assigned to ministry at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Bear, Delaware, and his pastoral year, 2021 – 2022, at St. Ann Parish in Wilmington, Delaware.

“I am overjoyed to be ordained a transitional deacon for the Diocese of Wilmington,” Mr. Gebhart said. “There have been countless people in my life who have supported me throughout my years of formation, and I am eager to give back to them by my service as a deacon. In this final time of preparation, I feel grateful to the Lord for calling me to serve Him and His Church in this capacity.”

The Diaconate is a ministry rooted deeply in scriptural accounts of the early Church.  The word “deacon” comes from the Greek word diakonia, which means, “to serve.”  There are two types of deacons in the Catholic Church, those who are ordained to the order and remain in it (permanent deacons) and those who are ordained to the order on their way to priestly ordination (transitional deacons). Mr. Gebhart is on track to be ordained to the Priesthood in 2024.

More information about the Diocese of Wilmington’s efforts to increase vocations-awareness and to work with people who may have priestly or religious vocations is available by contacting the Rev. Norman Carroll, Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations at 302-573-3113 or vocations@cdow.org. More information is available at www.cdow.org/vocations.

The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington was established in 1868 and comprises 56 parishes, 18 missions and 29 schools serving the State of Delaware and the nine counties of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.  Information is available at www.cdow.org.

Your gift helps our Church to serve the poor, the sick, the distressed, our children and our elderly. As parishioners of St. Polycarp Church, we are being asked to serve others by sharing our resources. Your generosity enables us to accompany our brothers and sisters in need.
Our parish target is $60,000. Your financial support of the Appeal also provides funding for our parish. After achieving the goal assigned to our parish, we receive 50% of monies collected over our target for our own parish and ministry needs. Please prayerfully consider your generous gift to this Faith and Charity Catholic Appeal. Kindly decide ahead of time the contribution you wish to make this year and come to Church next weekend prepared to complete your pledge and offer your support to our parish, and the Diocese of Wilmington. To learn more about the Faith and Charity Catholic Appeal, visit www.cdow.org; click “Giving” then “Faith and Charity Catholic Appeal,” or simply scan this QR code with your cellphone.

LET US PRAY: Prayer to St. Michael

Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

 THIS WEEKEND, APRIL 15th & 16th (& Monday, April 17th – Friday April 21st

CONFIRMATION: Please pray for our 14 parish youth who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation tomorrow, Saturday, April 15th at Holy Cross Church, Dover. Let us pray to the Holy Spirit, to move powerfully in their lives! Most Rev. William Koenig, Bishop of the Diocese of Wilmington, will be the Confirming Prelate.

APOSTLES’ CREED: We will pray the Apostles’ Creed during the Easter season beginning this weekend. The Apostles’ Creed can be found in the Breaking Bread Hymnal on page 10. Praying the Apostles’ Creed, instead of the usual Nicene Creed, more closely reflects our baptism in Christ, as well as, catechizes the assembly regarding the holiness and full baptismal character of the Easter season. Our call is to the continuing conversion begun in baptism. It is a call that requires vigilance that our heart does not wander from the voice of our God.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD (CLOW) will take place this Sunday, April 16th during the 10:30 am Mass. All children ages PK – 4th grade are welcome to join us. Children will be called to come forward before the First Reading. They will return to you after the General Intercessions.

LET US PRAY:

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.
