Letter from Fr. Jim – Announcement of new program – Pastor’s Pen, Sept. 2

September 2, 2022

Dear People of God,

I hope and pray that all is well with you and your loved ones as we approach the end of Summer!

This year, as in some previous years, we are having trouble meeting our goal for the Annual Catholic Appeal. Presently, we are $4415 short of our responsibility to support our Diocesan ministries to those who are in need. Without the solidarity of our parishes, the larger picture of caring for others cannot happen. Therefore, if the people of the parishes cannot meet the goal, then the parishes themselves must support the needs of the Diocese.

Realizing this interconnectedness of the Parochial Church to the Diocesan Church, one of our folks has come forward with a very generous offer. They will match any gift of $150 or more to the Annual Faith and Charity Catholic Appeal up to the total of $2200. This is a blessing to our beloved St. Polycarp Parish!

For your gift to the Diocese to receive these matching funds, it must be received at the Parish Office during the month of September. Do not send your pledge directly to the Diocese. (Checks should be made payable to the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington.) We will forward it for you after we have recorded the gift for our donor to double. Further, please indicate on your card “Matching Fund Program”. This will allow our benefactor to double your gift.

We are truly grateful to our anonymous parishioner whose generosity will help us to meet our goal. We are thankful for all those who have already been good stewards of God’s gifts and supported our Diocesan ministries. Finally, we are grateful for all those who will now join our other parishes in solidarity with caring for those in need. This unity of our folks has become the trademark and rich heritage of our parish over the decades.

May God continue to bless us and reward the generous stewardship of His faithful people here at St. Polycarp.

Fraternally,

GIVING, GROWING, GLORIFYING – Part 1

Dedication and Blessing  – August 20, 2022 (Part 2 to follow at a later time.)

Weekend Update August 27/28

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

“When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment. Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
                Luke 14:12-14

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE –  QUESTIONS TO PONDER
– When have you been drawn to another’s act of humility?

– Are you able to give without expecting something in return?
– How is God’s love exemplified by a person who does not expect reciprocity?

MARRIAGE MOMENTS: Sunday, August 28: Dare you share with your beloved a foolish thing you’ve done during your life? More importantly, share one way that you see your beloved as wise (other than marrying you.)

PARENTING POINTERS: Sunday, August 28: Phones, technology, TVs are part of modern life. They are helpful. (It would take me a lot longer to drive places without a GPS.) But how much is too much? Ask your family which piece of modern technology is most important to them and which is least?

LET US PRAY:  A prayer on the Passion of St. John the Baptist – August 29

O God, You raised up St John the Baptist to prepare a perfect person for Christ.
We call upon St John’s intercession to properly prepare us with a true sense
of repentance to receive Your grace and salvation.
Make us faithful to truth and justice, as You did Your servant,
John the Baptist, herald of Your Son’s birth and death.
Lord, may You increase Your life within us.
Amen.

Letter from Fr. Jim – Announcement – Facilities Manager

August 26, 2022

Dear People of God,

I hope and pray that all is well with you and your loved ones as Summer comes to an end!

The new life of the Resurrection that burst forth on Easter morning continued to be revealed for weeks as the Apostles struggled to understand it. With the passage of time, we come to comprehend the mystery of God’s unfolding wisdom. Accordingly, our experience of the Paschal Mystery with our Professional Staff continues to show God’s goodness. After interviews with viable candidates, we have discerned our new Facilities Manager.

George Hutchinson is no stranger to our parish. His wife, Mary Grace, has been involved in many of our ministries over the years including PSR, Children’s Liturgy of the Word and currently comes into the office weekly to assist with the Bulletin. Over the course of decades, George has been a good steward of the gifts God has entrusted to his care and assisted St. Polycarp in varied endeavors. He has always been a model of dependability and service.

George has decades of experience with caring for facilities. He has successfully guided his own business. His accumulated and diverse knowledge will be an asset to our community. Please keep George in your prayers as he prepares to assume the ministry of caring for our campus. Certainly as the next few months progress, we will experience an unfolding of the new model of our Staff. This will require patience by every member and ministry in our parish. Please continue to pray for our Professional Staff as we follow where God is leading our beloved St. Polycarp.

May God continue to bless you and reward your goodness.
Fraternally,

JDH/jml

MARRIAGE MOMENTS: Sunday, August 21: Sometimes our deficiencies can show the power of God working in us.  How does your beloved lift you up when you feel low?

PARENTING POINTERS: Sunday, August 21: As children grow older they often balk at doing “religious” stuff with their family.  Be creative about inviting your children into faith experiences.  Ask what THEY think would be a meaningful way to “serve the Lord.”  It might seem crazy, but try it once.

LET US PRAY:  St. Bartholomew, Apostle – August 24

Oh, Jesus, Saint Bartholomew’s greatest desire was to know the truth. When first informed about You, his initial reaction was, “How can anything good come from Nazareth?”
But as soon as he met You, he wanted to become one of Your disciples. You said of him, “Here is a man in whom there is no deception.” I ask him to pray against the deceptions that are influencing me and the people I know. Help us to experience Your affirmation when we are honest, give us courage to resist lying as a means of self-protection, and inspire our minds to recognize the truth when we hear it. Saint Bartholomew, pray for us. Amen.
