Weekend Update October 28/29

TODAY, OCTOBER 27th, 2023

Pope Francis has announced another day of prayer and fasting for an end to the Israel-Hamas war.

“I have decided to call for a day of fasting and prayer on Friday, Oct. 27,” the Pope said. It will be “a day of penance to which I invite sisters and brothers of the various Christian denominations, those belonging to other religions, and all those who have at heart the cause of peace in the world, to join in as they see fit,” the Holy Father continued.

A vigil will take place at 6 p.m. in St. Peter’s Square,
where the faithful will join the Pope to participate in “an hour of prayer in a spirit of penance to implore peace in our time, peace in this world.”

Although a specific fast or penance is not prescribed, Catholics are invited to fast in whatever capacity they can October 27,
joining their sacrifice to the suffering of Christ for people affected by the strife.

Catholics of the Diocese of Wilmington are asked to take up the Holy Father’s invitation in praying for a peaceful resolution to this war and for peace throughout the world.
On Friday, October 27 at the Cathedral of Saint Peter, Bishop Koenig will be presiding at the 11 am Eucharistic Holy Hour with the recitation of the Rosary for peace followed by the 12:10 pm Mass. The faithful of the diocese are invited to attend.

FAITH & FATIMA: Come join us this Sunday, October 29th as we hear “Faith & Fatima, Stories From the Heart”, by presenter Alice Reiss Israel.
The Blessed Mother appeared to three children in rural Portugal in 1917, calling on the world to repent and say the Rosary. On July 13th, she showed them a vision of hell to reveal the suffering caused by sin, and gave them the “Fatima prayer” and asked that it be said at the end of every decade of the Rosary. Almost no-one believed the children. But Our Lady promised a miracle. On October 13th, the “Miracle of the Sun” happened: the Sun danced, and was witnessed by 70,000 amazed people, including skeptics and scientists.  Alice Reiss Israel’s father witnessed that miracle and it changed his life. Alice’s life is also marked by faith in Fatima and she is coming to share her story with us next Sunday, October 29th, after Mass. Please join us!

BIRTHRIGHT’S ANNUAL BOTTLES FOR BABIES FUNDRAISER: Throughout the whole month of October, “Respect Life month,” Birthright of Delaware hosts its Annual Bottles for Babies Fundraiser. Baby bottles are available at the Church doors. We ask you to please take as many bottles as you would like . Fill the bottle with loose change, cash or a check then please read the insert, fill it out as neatly as possible (if you chose to do so for a Tax credit).  Return the bottle(s) to the baskets near the Church doors at the end of October or sooner. Checks should be made payable to Birthright of Delaware. The proceeds benefit pregnant women and their babies. Thank you for your willingness to support and choose life! Bottles should be returned to these baskets at the end of October.

CHRISTMAS AT SEA: Throughout October, the Seaman’s ministry will be collecting donations to create “ditty boxes.” The items will be placed in plastic shoe boxes and wrapped by our Confirmation students. Our Girl Scouts will then deliver the boxes to the Seaman’s Center of Wilmington around Thanksgiving. This is truly a Corporal Work of Mercy that we can all partake in. We are collecting gloves, hats, scarves, and full size items such as soap, shaving cream, deodorant, etc. Collection boxes will be in the hallway. ALL SOULS NOVENA: (Novena begins on All Souls’ Day, November 2nd.) Let us send our love and wishes to all those loved ones who are no longer on Earth hoping for peace and happiness. Time heals everything but it can never bring back the warmth and love of our dear ones who are no longer with us. The most powerful prayer we can offer for the holy souls in purgatory is to have the holy Mass said on their behalf. The All Souls Day Novena of Masses provides an opportunity for us to renew our hope in Christ’s promise of eternal life.  Please use the All Souls Day envelopes to list the loved ones you wish to be remembered during these special Masses.  Extra envelopes will be available at the Church doors.

2023 FAITH AND CHARITY CATHOLIC APPEAL: UPDATE: We extend our heartfelt appreciation to each and every one of you who have already contributed to our parish Faith and Charity Catholic Appeal. Dear God, thank You for the example of the Saints.
I desire to join in their company, worshiping You forever in Heaven.
Please help me follow their footsteps, and Yours, Jesus Christ.
Please help me to conform myself to Your image,
seeking Your will in all things, as the Saints did.
Please help me to devote myself, and all that I do, to Your glory,
and to the service of my neighbors. Amen.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
